Cape Cod Provisions Is Taking The Tart To Sweeter Heights

POCASSET, MA. - When eating, cooking, or baking with berries, most people would probably think of blueberries or raspberries before the cranberry. However if you combined that unique, tart taste with the right ingredients such as premium chocolate, then you just may have the makings of a successful specialty food business.

This is what Susan Faria thought back in 1996 when she decided to leave a highly successful business executive position to start her own company, Cape Cod Provisions. What started out as a sole proprietorship has now turned into a thriving limited liability corporation, marketing cranberry-based products to businesses and individual customers throughout the U.S., United Kingdom, and Japan.

Cape Cod Provisions offers a variety of chocolate and fruit confections under its registered Cape Cod Cranberry™ and Harvest Sweets® brands. The native fruit and its tart flavor, combined with chocolate and other confectionery ingredients, created the demand for the Harvest Sweets® line and the addition of seven fruits. "Cranberries and blueberries are two of only three fruits native to North America," Cape Cod marketing coordinator Erin Donavan said in a recent interview. "And they are both very high in anti-oxidents as is dark chocolate."

Their products include sweetened dried cranberries, chocolate and yogurt covered cranberries, fruit and cranberry truffles, chocolate covered fruit, cranberry and almond chocolate bars, and their signature item Cranberry Bog Frogs®, a wonderful combination of sweetened dried cranberries, roasted cashews and creamy caramel, all drenched in milk chocolate.

Cape Cod Provisions primarily serves gourmet food stores, candy and gift shops, country stores, and gift basket companies, and also offers a web site for individual customers to visit and order online. They also target specialty food, candy distributors, and trade shows as another main source for their customer base. In fact, the introduction of their product happened at the Boston Gift Show back in 1996, and since then have grown into possibly the most successful cranberry specialty food small business anywhere.

"We work these trade shows aggressively and measure sales generated for payback," Fiara states. "It is a crucial part of our marketing program."
Upcoming trade shows for Cape Cod Provisions include the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco on January 23rd 2005 and the aforementioned Boston Gift Show on April 2nd.

This company also take pride in the unique packaging of their products, which are available in the standard background of brilliant deep-red cranberries, or in a variety of elegant gift packaging including wave-textured gift boxes, sheer cloth bags, and new seasonal "Holiday" and "Hearts 'n Flowers" packaging for Christmas and Valentine.

"We take pride in our eye-catching packaging, and a good ratio of chocolate and fruit in our chocolate covered fruits," Donavan said. "Our fruit truffles have real fruit puree in the soft ganache centers, and are individually wrapped in that fruits' color foil wrap."

Their latest products include three new Harvest Sweets® fruit truffle (blueberry, key-lime, cranberry), featuring ganache centers of pureed fruit, fresh cream, and cocoa butter surrounded in milk or dark chocolate. They also plan to further expand upon our lines with additional chocolate covered fruits and fruit truffles.

Cape Cod Provisions has made wonderful strides over its eight years in business, growing from that original sole proprietorship to a major cranberry specialty confection company with a new and larger location, and several fulltime employees. The company has also assumed some of their own packaging, which was previously handled by outside contractors. "We are especially busy during the holiday season," Erin stated. "We ship year round, and during the warmer months provide insulated containers with cold packs for our products."

They have been featured in national publications such as Chocolateer and Vegetarian Times, and in 2000 was awarded the Small Business Of The Year Award from Cape Cod SCORE (Service Corps Of Retired Executives Association). Cape Cod Provisions continues to excel in creating new and flavorful ways to enjoy that unique little tart that is the cranberry. Visit their web site at
